Goodbye: My Last Post

Now, readers, I must say farewell: this is going to be my last blog post. I hope all of you enjoyed "Note What Follows: The Life and Times of a Colon" as much as I did writing it. My feelings about writing are summed up by these words from the brilliant F. Scott Fitzgerald:
The reason one writes isn't the fact he wants to say something. He writes because he has something to say.
With the writing of this blog, I have accomplished just what I have to say. I know you all have learned something because of this blog, and that brings me great joy. It is 6:52 p.m., and I, Colon, am signing off.

Odd Jobs: Titles, Bibles, and Times

As a fairly unique piece of punctuation, I enjoy the occasional time when I am able to do my job. However,  I also work part time doing some odd jobs to help around where I can. Sometimes I go to the local church and help out separating Bible chapters and verses, and other times I go to the clock store and help differentiate between hours and minutes. Also, if you haven't noticed already from the title of my blog and all of my posts, I am excellent at separating titles and subtitles! While I was looking for a quick and easy way to make some money last summer, I stumbled upon a business which needed some assistance in writing business letters. I helped them out by following the salutation, but I still think that was a boring job.

Clarifying Statements: Helping to Explain

People often come to me for advice. They come up to me and ask one simple question: "Colon, can you help me explain something?" Being the nice piece of punctuation I am, I always respond positively. I offer to use my services to connect two statements, one of which clarifies another. Take note of the following examples:
Patrick was extremely disappointed in himself: he had received a bad grade on an essay he had written.

After a long weekend, we finally felt a wave of relief wash over us: the grammar project was finished!

Preceding Lists: Sharing My Groceries and Favorite Books

So, readers, I am drawing a blank as to what I should write about. I think I might just share what I bought at the local Save Mart this morning. In fact, I can even write "as follows" or "as the following" and do my job at the same time! My grocery list this morning was as follows: two dozen eggs, a loaf of French bread, three gallons of milk, and some flank steaks. Well, that was fun. Do you like books, readers? I love them. Over summer, I read the following books: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson, and Deception Point by Dan Brown.

Introducing Quotes: The Wise Words of Albert Einstein

Today, I thought I would demonstrate one of my favorite uses and introduce a long quotation for all of you. So, without further ado, I present to you one of my favorite quotes by the great Albert Einstein:
The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.
Isn't that quote amazing? However, every quote that I precede does not necessarily have to be as lengthy as the on previously stated. A short quote that explains a previous statement can follow a colon. For example, when I was having a bad week when an inspirational quote by Benjamin Franklin popped into my head: "Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight."

The Beginning: An Introduction to My Life

Hello everyone. My name is Colon and I am here for the following reasons: to inform all of you readers about what I do for a living, to share my personal views on life, and possibly to make some random rants about things that annoy me. Thank you for taking your time to read this. I would also like to make a special shout out to the best English teacher around, Ms. Guissi.
